Austin to Dallas–Fort Worth: I-35 Long Haul Guide

Quick answer: Austin to Dallas is about 195 miles on I-35 (about 185 to Fort Worth) — roughly 3 hours when both metros are quiet, commonly 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes if you hit peaks. Best departures from Austin: 6:00–8:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m.–noon. Worst: 2:00–4:00 p.m. (Austin outbound plus DFW inbound). At Hillsboro take I-35E for Dallas, I-35W for Fort Worth.

About 195 miles up I-35 — three hours in clean conditions, four or more if you get the timing wrong. This drive has congestion at both ends and a decision in the middle. Midpoint spoke: Waco to Dallas. South of Austin: Austin to San Antonio. Metroplex hub: Dallas to Fort Worth.

The short answer

The route and the split

I-35 north out of Austin through Round Rock, Georgetown, Temple and Waco. At Hillsboro, about 155 miles in, I-35 divides into I-35E through Waxahachie to Dallas and I-35W through Alvarado to Fort Worth. Commit at Hillsboro. Correcting after the split costs 30–40 minutes. SH 130 toll skips central Austin's I-35 and rejoins north of the city — frequently the better start on a weekday afternoon or during an Austin event. Why both ends are hard

The Austin end. I-35 through central Austin is one of the most congested stretches in Texas — TTI has previously named the section between US 290 N and SH 71 as the state's single most congested roadway. TxDOT has the $548 million Capital Express South project underway, adding two HOV lanes in each direction from Ben White Boulevard south (MyMobility35).

The DFW end. Dallas–Fort Worth holds 41 of the state's 100 most congested road segments per TTI and TxDOT (Dallas Morning News; TxDOT Top 100). On the I-35E approach: I-35E into downtown, the active I-30 Canyon construction zone, and Lower Stemmons past the Design District. For Fort Worth arrivals, I-35W between SH 183 and I-30 is on the same list. The middle 100 miles — Georgetown through Waco to Hillsboro — is genuine highway and rarely the problem.

Timing: both ends have to work

Stops

Three hours needs one proper stop. Georgetown/Salado (~35–55 miles) if you left before dawn. Temple/Belton (~70 miles). Waco (~100 miles) is the natural halfway break. Hillsboro (~155 miles) is the last stop before you commit. A longer stop at Waco or Hillsboro can shift a bad DFW arrival into a good one.

Southbound

Weather

Spring convective storms (March–June) are the main risk, often late afternoon onto the DFW evening peak. Flash flooding, crosswinds between Temple and Hillsboro, and rare severe ice at both metro ends. See does rain make traffic worse.

Before you leave

Two metro peaks three hours apart is a hard timing problem you can only solve if you know what DFW will look like when you arrive. BoardSpy models Austin's outbound build, the open middle, and your DFW arrival window, with live weather along the whole route.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Austin to Dallas?

About 195 miles, roughly 3 hours when both metros are quiet, commonly 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes if you hit peaks at either end. Fort Worth is about 185 miles.

What is the best time to leave Austin for Dallas?

6:00–8:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m.–noon. Avoid 2:00–4:00 p.m., which stacks Austin's outbound peak with DFW's inbound peak. Friday afternoon is worse.

Do I take I-35E or I-35W?

I-35E for Dallas, I-35W for Fort Worth. The split is at Hillsboro, about 155 miles north of Austin. Correcting after the split costs 30–40 minutes.

Should I use SH 130 leaving Austin?

On weekday afternoons, Fridays, and Austin event days, yes — it skips central I-35. Off-peak it is usually an unnecessary toll. Southbound it is more valuable as an Austin bypass on arrival.

Where should I stop?

Waco is the natural halfway break. Hillsboro is the last decision point before the I-35 split. A longer stop can be used to miss the DFW evening peak.
