The three things worth checking
1. Conditions on your specific route, not your city. A traffic report for your metro is close to useless. What matters is the corridor you drive and the direction you drive it. An incident on the other side of town changes nothing for you; one at your interchange changes everything.
2. The forecast for your departure window, not right now. If you leave in forty minutes, current conditions are the wrong data. What matters is what the road looks like when you are on it.
3. Whether anything unusual is happening. Events, construction, and weather are the three things that break an otherwise stable pattern.
Departure time matters more than route
This is the finding most people underestimate.
On a typical metro corridor, the spread between the best and worst route at a given hour is roughly ten to fifteen minutes. The spread between the best and worst departure time on a given route is roughly thirty.
If you can only control one variable, control when you leave.
Two patterns worth knowing:
Direction asymmetry. Employment concentrates at one end of most corridors, so traffic loads inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening. Travelling against the dominant flow at peak is dramatically cheaper than travelling with it — often the difference between a 45-minute and a 75-minute trip on the same road at the same hour.
Steepest at the edges. The delay curve climbs fastest at the shoulders of the peak, not in the middle. Moving a 4:00 p.m. departure to 3:30 saves more than moving 5:00 to 4:30, because 4:00 sits on the steep climb while 5:00 sits near the flat top.
That means small shifts at the right moment beat large shifts at the wrong one.
What makes it different day to day
Weather. A corridor running at capacity has no headroom, so disruption compounds non-linearly. The same rain that costs you five minutes at 11 a.m. can cost twenty-five at 5 p.m.
Incidents. A single crash on a corridor with no alternative route — an elevated section, a bridge, a tunnel — does not slow the trip, it stops it.
Construction. Frequently a permanent feature rather than an occasional one. Many metro corridors have continuous work somewhere along their length for years at a time.
Events. Stadiums, arenas and venues near a freeway load traffic in a two-to-three-hour window before start time. Checking a schedule takes thirty seconds and is the highest-return thirty seconds available on many corridors.
What a general traffic app tells you, and what it doesn’t
Mapping apps are good at showing you conditions right now and routing you around what is already happening.
They are less good at the question most commuters actually have, which is: should I leave now, or in twenty minutes?
That is a prediction problem rather than a routing problem, and it is the one that determines your day.
How to build a picture of your own commute
If you drive the same route regularly, a week of paying attention gives you more than any app:
- Note your departure time and arrival time for a week. Just those two numbers.
- Identify your cliff edge — the departure time after which things get sharply worse. Most corridors have one, and it is usually narrower than people expect.
- Test leaving fifteen minutes earlier for three days. On most corridors the saving is larger than fifteen minutes.
- Note what happened on the bad days. Weather, an incident, an event. Patterns emerge quickly.
That exercise costs you nothing and typically finds twenty to thirty minutes a day.
