The morning and evening peaks have different shapes
The morning peak is compressed. People are aiming at fixed start times, so departures cluster tightly. The build is sharp, the peak is intense, and it clears reasonably quickly.
The evening peak is spread out. People leave when their work finishes, which happens across several hours. The build starts earlier, lasts longer, and drains slowly.
The practical consequence: the evening bad window is typically four hours wide, not two. On most metro corridors it starts around 3:00 p.m. and does not properly clear until after 6:30 or 7:00.
Most people plan for a two-hour window and get caught by the extra two.
Why the evening is usually slower
Three things stack:
The longer window means more of your realistic departure options fall inside it.
Discretionary trips join the commute. Shopping, school runs, gym trips and social travel all happen in the evening and share the same roads. The morning has almost none of this.
Events load the evening. Stadiums, arenas and venues start in the evening, and they load traffic two to three hours before start time — directly on top of the commute.
The direction question
Employment concentrates at one end of most corridors, which means the evening loads outbound, away from the centre.
If you work in the employment centre and live outside it, you are travelling with the dominant flow both ways — the harder version of the commute.
If you do the reverse, you travel against the flow both ways. On the same road at the same hour, that difference is frequently twenty minutes or more.
What actually works in the evening
Leave before 3:00 or after 7:00. Simple, and often not possible — but if you have any flexibility even one day a week, this is where it buys the most.
Shift by fifteen minutes at the edges, not the middle. The delay curve is steepest at the shoulders. Moving 3:45 to 3:30 saves more than moving 5:00 to 4:45, because 3:45 is on the steep climb and 5:00 is near the flat top.
Check event schedules. This matters far more in the evening than the morning. Thirty seconds, once a week, if your route passes a venue.
Wait rather than crawl. If you are at work and the corridor is stopped, staying half an hour is often faster than leaving now — and considerably less unpleasant. The evening peak drains; you can watch it happen.
Take the longer route when the short one is congested. Extra miles at highway speed beat fewer miles at 20 mph. In the evening, when the direct route is saturated, a bypass that is 20% longer is frequently faster.
Friday is its own problem
On most corridors Friday breaks the pattern in three ways:
- The peak starts earlier, often building from 2:00 p.m.
- It lasts longer, frequently not clearing until well after 7:00
- It stacks weekend departures on top of the commuter load
If you have one flexible day a week, make it Friday, and leave before 2:00 or after 7:30.
Weather hits the evening harder
A corridor at capacity has no headroom, so the same disruption costs more.
The same rain that costs you five minutes at 11 a.m. can cost twenty-five at 5 p.m. And because the evening peak is longer, there is more of it for weather to land on.
The rule that follows: if rain is forecast to arrive during the evening peak, leaving early beats any route choice. Getting ahead of weather is straightforward. Getting out of it is not.
The asymmetry to plan around
If your morning trip is 40 minutes and your evening trip is 60, that is normal — not a sign you are doing something wrong.
Plan them separately. The tactics that work in the morning (leave earlier, beat the compressed build) are not the same as the ones that work in the evening (wait it out, dodge the four-hour window, watch for events).
