The junction
I-70 runs east to west — Indianapolis toward Wheeling and Pittsburgh. I-71 runs northeast to southwest — Cleveland toward Cincinnati.
Through the city centre they merge and run together on a shared stretch, then split again. That shared section carries two interstates' worth of through-traffic plus downtown access — the same structural problem as Atlanta's Downtown Connector, at smaller scale.

The I-270 decision
Like Indianapolis and Charlotte, Columbus has a full ring, which makes the choice easy.
Take I-270 when you are passing through. A few extra miles, and it removes the merged section entirely.
Take the through route when your destination is central or it is genuinely off-peak.
Which way round? The north side tends to be busier — it passes the retail and office corridors. The south side is usually the quieter run for pure through-traffic.

The effect reaches I-270 as well as the through-routes, and it runs for hours before and after kick-off.
If you are crossing Columbus on an autumn Saturday, check the schedule. It is the single most useful thing you can do for this crossing.
Weather
Winter snow and ice. Central Ohio gets both, and the flat open country west of the city produces blowing and drifting snow that reduces visibility on I-70.
Lake-effect snow does not usually reach Columbus — that is a northern Ohio problem — but if you are continuing toward Cleveland on I-71 it becomes a factor.
Spring severe weather — thunderstorms and occasional tornado risk, March through June.
Fog in the low areas is common on autumn mornings.

Services are plentiful at the I-270 interchanges.
Ohio's rest area rules are worth understanding before you plan a stop. Reporting on Ohio's policy conflicts: some sources state Ohio does not permit overnight camping at its standard rest areas, while trucking industry guidance lists Ohio among states allowing truck parking of up to around ten hours. Posted signs at individual facilities govern.
The unambiguous option is the Ohio Turnpike. Eight service plazas along the Turnpike offer designated overnight RV parking with electric hookups, for a fee, first come first served. Those are explicitly provided for overnight use.
Heading east, it gets stricter. Pennsylvania caps PennDOT rest areas at two hours within a 24-hour period — though Pennsylvania Turnpike service plazas allow up to 24 hours, which is the workable option on that route. New York limits ordinary rest areas to roughly two to three hours for passenger vehicles.
If you need a genuine overnight on an eastbound run, plan it at a Turnpike service plaza or a private truck stop rather than a standard rest area.
