Houston to Fort Worth: Drive Time, Routes and Traffic

Quick answer: Houston to Fort Worth is about 260 miles — roughly 3 hours 50 minutes when both metros are quiet, 4.5 to 5 hours if you hit rush hour at either end. Leave Houston before 6:00 a.m. or between 9:30 a.m. and noon. Avoid 3:00–6:00 p.m., which stacks Houston's outbound peak with a DFW evening arrival. Finish on I-20 west, not I-30 through Arlington.

Roughly 260 miles and four hours of driving, with the two worst traffic problems in Texas sitting at either end. The middle three hours are straightforward. The first and last forty-five minutes are where the trip is won or lost. DFW hub: Dallas to Fort Worth traffic guide. Why I-20 often wins at the north end: fastest route Dallas to Fort Worth.

The short answer

Why the ends matter more than the middle

Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land holds 36 of the state's 100 most congested road segments, and Dallas–Fort Worth holds 41. Between them, the two metros account for more than three quarters of the entire list (TxDOT Top 100; Dallas Morning News).

The state's single most congested segment is the West Loop, I-610, in Harris County — first for the third consecutive year, generating an annual congestion cost of about $166 million and roughly 1.73 million hours of delay. Second is the Eastex Freeway, I-69/US 59, also in Harris County. At the other end, I-35W between SH 183 and I-30 in Fort Worth appears on the same list. Route options

I-45 to I-20 west — the interstate route

North on I-45 through Huntsville and Corsicana, then west on I-20 past the southern Metroplex into Fort Worth. ~265 miles, ~3 hr 55 min free-flow. Best for most trips, especially arriving during a DFW peak. Approaching Fort Worth on I-20 keeps you out of I-30 and Arlington entirely.

US 290 to SH 6 / US 287 — the northwest diagonal

Northwest through Brenham and Waco before joining US 287 into Fort Worth. ~255 miles, ~4 hr free-flow. Best off-peak, for smaller roads, or Brazos Valley stops. Slightly shorter, comparable in time, less consistent speed and fewer services.

I-45 to I-35E — the Dallas approach

North on I-45 into Dallas, then west. Best only if you have a Dallas stop. If Fort Worth is the destination, I-20 is almost always the better ending.

Timing the trip

The DFW evening peak between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. can add half an hour to a trip that was going fine for three and a half hours.

Stops along the way

Huntsville — about an hour out of Houston. Madisonville / Buffalo — I-45 midpoint. Corsicana — last easy stop before metro traffic. Waco — midpoint on the US 290 / US 287 routing. A 20-minute break at Buffalo or Waco is often the cheapest way to shift your DFW arrival out of the evening peak.

Weather on this route

Spring convective storms are the main risk, often late afternoon — the same window as the worst arrival timing. Crosswinds between Huntsville and Corsicana affect high-profile vehicles. Fog is a real hazard on rural stretches in the early morning, particularly in the Brazos Valley. See does rain make traffic worse.
