Memphis is one of the biggest freight hubs in North America, and it has two river bridges. Those two facts explain everything about crossing it.
The junction
I-40 runs east to west — Nashville toward Little Rock. I-55 runs north to south — St Louis toward Jackson. I-240 rings the city.
The two bridges
Every westbound route out of Memphis crosses the Mississippi, and there are exactly two crossings.
The Hernando de Soto Bridge carries I-40. Distinctive double-arch design, locally known as the M bridge.
The Memphis–Arkansas Bridge carries I-55, south of the other.
These are the only vehicle crossings for a considerable distance in either direction. That makes them genuine single points of failure — when one closes, the other absorbs everything and the delay is measured in hours, not minutes.
It has happened. If a bridge closure is reported, the detour is long enough to change your whole route plan rather than your afternoon.
The freight factor
Memphis is a global logistics hub — a major air cargo centre and a heavy rail and road freight junction.
The practical consequence: the roads carry substantial truck volume outside commuter hours. A 2 a.m. crossing here is busier than the same hour in a comparable metro, and I-40 and I-55 through the city are working freight corridors first and commuter roads second.
That also means incidents involving heavy vehicles, which clear more slowly.

The Tennessee rest area rule
Worth knowing before you plan a stop.
Tennessee does not allow overnight truck parking at its rest areas. Drivers report a two-hour limit, statewide and enforced, with officers able to check logs and issue citations.
Compare the neighbours: Arkansas allows overnight parking with no limitation on length of stay, and publishes an interactive map showing each facility's truck parking, dump station, WiFi and propane availability. Mississippi generally permits overnight.
Practical consequence: if you are crossing Memphis and expect to need a long overnight, take it west of the river in Arkansas or south in Mississippi rather than in Tennessee. Short breaks at Tennessee rest areas are fine; sleeping is not.
Private truck stops in Tennessee are governed by the operator rather than the state DOT, so those remain an option.
Weather
Winter ice is the main hazard and Memphis handles it poorly — limited equipment, limited driver practice. The bridges freeze first.
Spring severe weather — thunderstorms, hail and tornado risk between March and May.
Flooding. The Mississippi floods, and river-adjacent roads have closed in major events.
Summer heat and humidity are significant.

I-240 interchanges have plentiful services and keep you out of the centre.
West Memphis, Arkansas, immediately across the river, is a major truck stop cluster — and it is in a state with no overnight limit. For a long-haul driver that combination makes it the obvious stop.
