You are not stopping in Atlanta. You just need to get past it — and Atlanta is unusually good at preventing that.
The short answer
Cross between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., or after 7:30 p.m.
Avoid 6:30–9:30 a.m. and 3:00–7:00 p.m. Atlanta’s evening peak is four hours wide, not two, and that is what catches people out.
The Downtown Connector is the whole problem
I-75 and I-85 both run through Atlanta, and for several miles through the city centre they merge into a single roadway — the Downtown Connector.
Two interstates’ worth of through-traffic, plus the entire city’s commuter load, on one road. It is consistently among the worst-performing urban freeway segments in the southeastern United States.
If you are driving I-75 north–south or I-85 northeast–southwest, your route runs straight through it unless you deliberately go around.
The decision: Connector or Perimeter
I-285, the Perimeter, is the ring road. It circles the city and lets you bypass the Connector entirely.

The rule: off-peak, go through. At peak, go around. If you are unsure, go around — the Perimeter costs you ten minutes when it is the wrong choice, and the Connector costs you forty.
Which way round? I-285 splits east and west. Broadly: use the west side if you are heading toward Birmingham or Chattanooga, the east side for Augusta or the Carolinas. Both work; the east side passes closer to the airport.

Friday is worse in both directions and the evening peak starts earlier — build from around 2:00 p.m.
Things that break the pattern
Truist Park. Braves home games generate substantial I-75 traffic in a two-to-three-hour window before first pitch, concentrated around the Cumberland area northwest of the city. Check the schedule if you are crossing on a game day.
Hartsfield-Jackson. One of the world’s busiest airports sits south of the city on the I-75/I-85 corridor. Airport traffic does not follow commuter patterns — it is heavy at 5 a.m. and at 10 p.m.
Weather. North Georgia gets intense summer thunderstorms that arrive fast, and the Connector at capacity degrades badly when wet. Winter ice is rare and severe — Atlanta has limited equipment and drivers have limited practice, so an ice event closes the metro rather than slowing it.
Pollen season in spring is not a driving hazard but it is a real visibility and comfort issue if you are new to the region.
If you are stopping
Cumberland / Galleria, northwest on I-75, has substantial services and easy freeway access. It is also where Truist Park is, so avoid it on game days.
Anywhere on the Perimeter has services at most major interchanges, and stopping there keeps you out of the Connector entirely.
Which interstate are you on?
I-75 — the Florida-to-Michigan run. Atlanta is roughly the midpoint of the whole route and the single worst crossing on it.
I-85 — the Alabama-to-Virginia run. It shares the Connector with I-75 through the middle.
I-20 — runs east–west and crosses the others in the city centre. Less affected than the north–south routes but still touched by the Connector.
Whichever you are on, the crossing decision is the same: through at off-peak, around at peak.
