Shift Work Calendar App That Tells You When to Leave (2026)

Quick answer: Most shift calendar apps show you when you work. BoardSpy also tells you when to leave: build your rotation once, share it with family or coworkers, and BoardSpy rings an alarm before each shift timed to live traffic on your route (App Store · Google Play). The rotation, one shared calendar for up to 3 people and a Google Calendar mirror are free; Pro unlocks unlimited calendars and a lock-screen leave countdown.

About 16% of U.S. wage and salary workers usually work something other than a regular daytime schedule, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That includes evening, night, rotating, split and irregular shifts, and it rises to 37% in leisure and hospitality and 26% in transportation and utilities. If that is you, a normal calendar is a poor fit: you need a pattern that repeats on its own, a way for the people at home to see it, and an alarm that knows a 6:45 a.m. start on a wet Monday is not the same drive as a Sunday night.

Competitor features are taken from each app's store listing or help pages in October 2026. "Not listed" means the listing does not mention leave times based on traffic, not that we tested every setting.

1. BoardSpy — best if you drive to your shifts

BoardSpy started as a leave-time traffic alarm for commuters, and the shift calendar is built on top of that. You create shift types (Day, Night, Off, or your own) and a repeating pattern, and BoardSpy fills about 120 days ahead, including overnight shifts and daylight saving changes. A shift with no address uses the destination of your saved BoardSpy route, so its alarm becomes a leave-time alarm based on live traffic. Add an address to a shift and BoardSpy times the drive there instead.

Shared calendars use an invite link or code, with owner, editor and viewer roles. Members get a push when a shift changes, and each day has a shared to-do list with its own alarms. You can also copy your Google Calendar into a shared calendar so the household sees when you are busy; by default those copies show only "Busy", not titles.

2. Supershift — best for pay and hours

Supershift is a mature Android shift calendar with rotations up to 2 years ahead, presets such as 4-on-4-off, DuPont, Pitman and Panama, sharing, home-screen widgets and earnings reports. It works offline with no account. Pro adds export to Google Calendar and PDF export. Its listing does not mention traffic-based leave times.

3. Shifty — best for a simple iPhone rota

Shifty focuses on entering your rotation fast and sharing a live calendar that others can view for free; planning your own shifts needs a subscription, according to its App Store listing.

4. Rostr — best for teams with a printed roster

Rostr reads a screenshot of your roster with AI, builds a shared group calendar, and adds shift swaps, wage calculation and encrypted chat. The free tier has ads; Rostr Pro removes them and unlocks unlimited scans and groups.

5. TimeTree — best as a general family calendar

TimeTree is a popular shared calendar with no dedicated shift rotation. You can repeat events, but its help center notes limits on Android, such as up to 365 repeats of one event, so long rotations take more upkeep.

Why the drive home matters after a night shift

In a 2016 PNAS study, 16 night-shift workers drove a closed test track after a night shift and after a normal night's sleep. After the night shift, 6 of 16 drives had at least one near-crash event, 11 near crashes in total, and every one happened after at least 45 minutes of driving. There were none after sleep. NIOSH training for nurses recommends planning a ride, a nap or another option before driving home tired.

BoardSpy cannot make you less tired, but it can stop you from leaving later than you need to and rushing. A leave-time alarm based on live traffic means less guessing about how bad the drive will be.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best shift work calendar app?

If you drive to your shifts, BoardSpy: it builds your rotation, shares it with family or coworkers, and rings a leave-time alarm before each shift based on live traffic. If you mainly want pay and hours tracking, Supershift is strong. For scanning a printed roster and swapping shifts with a team, Rostr fits better.

Can a shift calendar app tell me when to leave for work?

BoardSpy can. A shift with no address uses the destination of your saved BoardSpy route, so the alarm time moves with live traffic instead of a fixed reminder. Supershift, Shifty, Rostr and TimeTree list shift reminders or notifications, but their store listings do not mention leave times based on traffic.

Does BoardSpy handle rotating shifts like 4-on-4-off?

Yes. You create shift types, such as Day, Night and Off, and a repeating pattern. BoardSpy fills about 120 days ahead and handles overnight shifts that end the next morning and daylight saving changes.

Is the BoardSpy shift calendar free?

The basics are free: 1 rotation, 1 shared calendar of your own with up to 3 people, joining other people's calendars, and copying Google Calendar into 1 shared calendar. Free accounts and the 7-day trial get 1 calendar alarm a day, and shift alarms count toward it; Basic and above get unlimited alarms. Pro, Yearly and Lifetime add unlimited rotations, shared calendars and mirrors, the lock-screen leave countdown and export to your phone calendar.

Can my partner see my shifts without paying?

Yes. Joining a shared calendar is free. Your partner opens your invite link or code, installs BoardSpy and sees your shifts, and gets a push when you change them.

Does BoardSpy write my shifts into Google Calendar?

No. BoardSpy connects to Google Calendar read-only and never creates, edits or deletes Google events. It can copy your Google events into a shared BoardSpy calendar, as Busy blocks by default. On Pro you can export your BoardSpy shifts to a calendar on your phone.
