The Leave Time App That Checks Weather on Your Route

Quick answer: A leave time app tells you when to walk out the door based on conditions, rather than reminding you a fixed number of minutes before. Most check live traffic only. BoardSpy also checks weather on your route and folds rain, snow, fog and wind into the same pre-departure brief — which matters because the Federal Highway Administration attributes 23% of all non-recurring highway delay to snow, ice and fog alone. BoardSpy is free to start on iOS and Android.

Weather is the largest predictable variable that departure-timing apps ignore. Here is the data, what the category actually checks, and where BoardSpy differs.

Weather causes nearly a quarter of unexpected delay

The FHWA Road Weather Management Program measures what weather does to American roads, and the figures are larger than most drivers assume.

On freeways, speeds fall:

On arterials — the surface roads most commutes actually use — it is worse:

Capacity drops alongside speed: heavy rain cuts freeway capacity by 10 to 30%, heavy snow by 12 to 27%. Fewer vehicles get through, and the ones that do move more slowly.

The headline number: FHWA estimates 23% of non-recurring delay on US highways is caused by snow, ice and fog — roughly 544 million vehicle-hours a year.

Set that against INRIX's finding that the typical US driver lost 49 hours to congestion in 2025. Weather is not a rounding error on your commute. On a wet morning on surface streets, a 30-minute drive can run 38 to 40 minutes before a single incident has happened.

What leave time apps actually check

We checked every leave time app we could find in October 2026 — OnTimer, CommuteTimely, Traffic Alerts (MyCommute), On The Dot and LeaveNOW — reading each product's own website and app store listing.

None of them mentions weather. Not rain, not snow, not fog, not visibility. Every one adjusts departure time on live traffic alone.

That is a reasonable design choice as far as it goes. Traffic data already reflects weather after it has slowed people down — once cars are moving at 25 mph in the rain, the traffic layer shows 25 mph. The problem is timing. You are deciding when to leave before that slowdown shows up in the data, and a forecast of heavy rain starting at 8:00 a.m. is information available now that traffic speeds will not reflect until later.

Why weather hits timing harder than routing

A navigation app reroutes you around a problem you have already driven into. For weather, that barely helps: rain does not sit on one road the way a crash does. It covers your whole route and every alternative to it at once.

The only lever that works against weather is the one weather forecasts give you in advance — leaving earlier. Which makes it odd that departure-timing is exactly where the category stopped checking.

Three things follow from the FHWA numbers:

What BoardSpy does

BoardSpy is a leave time app: it checks your saved route before you leave and tells you when to go. Weather on that corridor is part of the same brief — rain, snow, fog and severe weather along your route, delivered with the traffic picture rather than as a separate app you would have to think to open.

It is not a navigation app. Once you set off, it opens Google Maps or Waze for turn-by-turn. The job it does is the decision you make ten minutes before you leave.

It also runs on Android, which no other app in this comparison does. OnTimer operates an Android waitlist; the rest are iOS-only or iOS-first.

Honest limits

Worth saying plainly, because a comparison that only lists strengths is not useful.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a leave time app that checks weather?

Yes — BoardSpy. It checks your saved route before you leave and includes rain, snow, fog and severe weather along that corridor in the same pre-departure brief as traffic. As of October 2026 it is the only app in this category that does: OnTimer, CommuteTimely, MyCommute, On The Dot and LeaveNOW all adjust on live traffic alone, with no weather mentioned anywhere in their marketing.

How much does weather actually slow traffic?

The FHWA measures freeway speed reductions of 3 to 13% in light rain or snow, 3 to 16% in heavy rain, and 5 to 40% in heavy snow. On arterial roads the effect is larger: 10 to 25% slower on wet pavement and 30 to 40% on snowy or slushy pavement. FHWA attributes 23% of all non-recurring highway delay to snow, ice and fog, about 544 million vehicle-hours a year.

Doesn't live traffic data already account for weather?

Partly, and too late. Traffic data shows the slowdown once drivers have already slowed — if cars are doing 25 mph in the rain, the traffic layer reports 25 mph. But you decide when to leave before that appears in the data. A forecast of rain starting at 8:00 a.m. is information you can act on now; the traffic layer will not reflect it until the rain is already falling.

Why not just reroute around bad weather?

Because weather does not sit on one road. A crash blocks a lane and a navigation app routes you around it. Rain covers your whole route and every alternative at the same time. The only lever that works is leaving earlier, which is a timing decision, not a routing one.

Does BoardSpy replace Google Maps or Waze?

No. BoardSpy is not a navigation app and does not provide turn-by-turn directions. It makes the departure decision before you drive, then opens your map app when you set off. Most people keep both.

Is there a leave time app for Android?

BoardSpy runs on Android and iOS. Among the apps compared here, no competitor has a confirmed Android build — OnTimer operates a waitlist, and the others are iOS-only or iOS-first. Get it on Google Play or the App Store.

What does BoardSpy cost?

Free to start with one route. Basic is $2.99 a month, Pro $4.99 a month, with yearly at $49.99 and a lifetime option at $99.99. Pricing is the same on both stores.
