faqs[7]{q,a}:
What are 2nd shift hours?,2nd shift hours are usually about 3pm to 11pm. Common versions are 2pm to 10pm and 4pm to midnight. Your employer sets the exact start and end, so check your offer or posted schedule.
What is second shift?,Second shift is the afternoon-to-evening shift that follows the day shift. You start in the afternoon and finish late at night. BLS counts it as an evening shift: most of your hours fall between 2pm and midnight.
What are the hours for second shift?,Most second shifts are 8 hours: 3pm to 11pm, 2pm to 10pm, or 4pm to midnight. Some places add an unpaid meal break, which pushes the finish time later. Your employer decides which one you work.
What time is evening shift?,Evening shift usually runs about 3pm to 11pm, the same as second shift or afternoon shift. Common versions are 2pm to 10pm and 4pm to midnight. BLS counts a shift as evening when most of its hours fall between 2pm and midnight.
How is second shift different from first and third?,First shift is the day shift, often about 7am to 3pm. Second shift picks up from there, about 3pm to 11pm. Third shift is overnight, about 11pm to 7am. Exact times vary by workplace.
Does second shift pay more?,Often, but not always. Many employers add a shift differential, either cents or dollars per hour or a percent of your base rate. Federal law does not require it, so it depends on your employer or union contract.
Is the drive to a 3pm shift in rush hour?,Often it is close. In many US cities the evening peak starts building around 3:30pm, so leaving for a 3pm start puts you on the road as traffic picks up. The drive home after 11pm is usually on near-empty roads.
