A warning on names: many employers use "2-2-3", "Pitman" and "Panama" interchangeably. The cadence is the same; the difference is whether your crew rotates between days and nights. Check your roster before you trust any label, including ours.

## The hours math: why they all land near 42

With four crews and two 12-hour shifts a day, each crew covers one quarter of the 168 hours in a week: 42 hours on average. What changes is how those hours bunch up.

- **DuPont:** 14 shifts per 28 days. Some weeks have six shifts, one week has none.
- **Pitman, 2-2-3 and Panama:** 7 shifts per 14 days, so 84 hours per two-week pay period on the nose. Weeks alternate between three and four shifts (36 and 48 hours).
- **4 on 4 off:** 182 or 183 shifts a year, about 2,190 hours.
- **4-3-3-4:** 7 shifts per 14 days, also 84 hours per two weeks, with the same weekdays repeating every fortnight.

If overtime matters to you, the 14-day patterns are the easiest to predict. DuPont pays out the same hours over the year but can push one week far above 40.

Here are four weeks of each rotation for one crew, starting on a Monday. D = 12-hour day, N = 12-hour night, a dash = off.

Read the weekends column by column and the trade-offs become obvious. Pitman gives you Friday through Sunday off every other week. 4 on 4 off slides one weekday later each cycle, so your weekends come and go. 4-3-3-4 started on a Monday never gives you a weekend shift at all, which is why it is usually paired with a second crew covering Thursday through Sunday.

## 12-hour shifts for nurses: 3×12s, nights and the drive home

Hospital nurses commonly work three 12-hour shifts a week (36 hours) rather than a formal four-crew rotation. Some units self-schedule, some block-schedule, and many nurses rotate between days and nights. Whatever your unit does, the same three issues come up.

### Stacking your 3×12s

Working your three shifts back to back gives you four days off in a row, but the third shift in a row is the most tiring. Splitting them (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) means more commutes and fewer real days off. ### Nights

The 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shift puts the hardest part of your night at 3 to 5 a.m. Anchor your sleep the same way on every night stretch, nap before the first night, and plan your switch back to days on your first day off rather than forcing it.
